Let me say I think go7 is one of the best insert makers on the market, and I own probably about a dozen products from them. That being said, I think this design is pretty mediocre. It is better than the plastic trays from CMON, but it definitely could have been much, much better.

Let me start with what is really good about this design:
– The clans are self-contained in a single box each making it easy to hand out boxes to each player.
– There are lots of finger holes for removing stuff like lids or boxes more easily.
– The card design storage is great and can hold cards by groups rather than by seasons.
– The entire base game fits in the box and isn’t split across boxes, even if you have the KS content (though the additional expansions go in the separate Kami box). That way you don’t have to carry two boxes if you are just playing the base game.
– There is no lid lift.
– As always, the margins are tight with things fitting perfectly snug and not loose or too tight, and the material seems very strong.
– The spots are all labeled and the Kami spots have the numbers making it easy to see what goes where.

Now what I don’t like:
– The tab on the token/coin box is problematic. That box fits in the top of the Kami tray which has a large hole on the side for removing from the game box. If you put the token box in the wrong way (the way that seems natural given the orientation of the text on the box), the tab kind of gets stuck. This could have easily been avoided if the hole in the Kami box was a little smaller or done differently.
– The turtle clan has a small tray that is kind of awkward to remove as there is nothing to hold on to. The tab that connects to the lid could have been done differently so there could be a hold to reach and grab it with.
– The couple of things above are pretty minor, and I would probably get it a 5 if it was just that, but now let me talk about what I think makes this design so problematic. Every single miniature is stored individually side-ways in a slot. Now lots of the other companies on the market have been doing this for quite a while, and the fact that go7 tends to avoid this is one of the things that I really like. The problem is that it is the epitome of form over function. It makes the storage look fancy and cool, but it also makes it a huge pain the ass to get things out and put them away.
The Kami are stacked up and overlapping making it a puzzle of how to get the order and orientation correct. For example, to remove the River Dragon, you have to remove three other miniatures first, and putting things back is even worse. It is very easy to put things back in the wrong order or simply have them turned the wrong way where after you put a couple more minis in, you have to go back and redo it to get it all to fit. The labeling so I can easily see where things go, but I have to spend a while figuring out how they go.
Now, I understand that the box is small, and for the monsters there may have not been a better way to make it work, but the problem is, the same thing is done for the faction figures. Instead of the awesomely simple boxes of Blood Rage, every single mini has to be put in separate slots, and not only that, but like with the monsters, you have a very specific order and orientation. Some factions even require that certain bushi sculpts be in specific spots. It is pretty much up to you to figure out all that out, and it is huge head-ache and waste of time. Probably the worst offender of all is the Dragonfly Clan. The shintos have to be put in the box in a very specific order (and before the bushi in that row) and when you put them in, you have to orient them slightly sideways facing downward and as you get to the bottom, do a final rotation just right so that their wings overlap each other. It is one thing to figure that out, but now imagine trying to explain it to your friend playing for the first time.
When I spend money on these kinds of inserts, I am primarily looking for two things: efficiency in space so that I can put more expansions in a single box and efficiency in organization so that getting out and putting away the game is quick. This design is so-so in the former and completely fails in the latter. In fact, the time it takes to put the game away like this is barely better than default that came with the game. As I said before, you are largely just swapping confusion about where pieces go for confusion about how they go. I am also fairly certain you are loosing space by having all these slots. If there was just a big box for each faction that you just throw it all in, I would bet it would take noticeably less volume AND putting the factions away would be ridiculously fast. Also since you are likely to get all the pieces out every time you play, there is no real reason to keep them separately. Maybe if you painted and wanted to keep them from rubbing you would want this, but honestly I think the competitors have a better design for that as the pieces here rub up against the slots a lot. On top of all that, the real kicker is increased complexity in building the boxes and additional cost due to more material.

Now I say all of this really as a plea to go7 to not move toward this kind of design. It is a waste of time, space, AND money for your customers. Sure it looks nice and maybe you might pull in some new customers with the way it looks, but if I have to help every single person at the table figure out how to get their figures back in the box and have the lid fit, that is a failure in design, plain and simple. I love the stuff you make, and it is a huge help for many of the games I play, but you guys can do a lot better than this. Very disappointed.
