Our storage solution for the Rising Sun™ base game provides a total storage solution for the base game components. This solution provides nine (9) storage trays, including five (5) clan storage trays with lids that provide storage for all clan components. This solution includes extensive etching to speed setup, breakdown, and gameplay. The monster etchings include monster name and mini number (found on the bottom of each monster mini). This storage solution is designed to store either the base game components or the upgraded Kickstarter components, but not both at the same time.
This storage solution provides:
- one (1) monster tray that provides a safe home for your eight (8) base game monsters, including monster name and number
- five (5) clan trays with lids and etching that store all clan components (even those insanely cool Turtle clan strongholds)
- one (1) large card storage tray with enough dividers to store each unique card set, sleeved or unsleeved
- one (1) small token tray for coins, Ronin tokens, and warn number tokens (or KS flags)
- one (1) tile storage tray for political mandate tiles, war province tokens, and shrine tiles
- this design includes room on top of the trays for board, instructions, and clan screens
Our clans trays are the stars of this design. We have created lidded clan trays that store all of the clan minis and components for each clan. Just grab the tray and pass it to a player. Done. The clan trays provided in our Rising Sun storage solution have three distinct heights in this solution:
- Bonsai Clan (34mm)
- Koi Clan (34mm)
- Lotus Clan (34mm)
- Dragonfly Clan (37mm)
- Turtle Clan (56.5mm)
Our RSUN-002 storage solution for the Daimyo box contains three additional clan trays in two heights:
- Sun Clan (37mm)
- Moon Clan (37mm)
- Fox Clan (34mm)
All clan trays have the same length and width dimensions and are interchangeable based on their height between this solution and the RSUN-002 solution for the Daimyo box.
We specifically design these clan trays to also store a political/war tile inside each.
We designed the card storage tray to accept sleeved or unsleeved cards and to store your cards by card set – core seasons. Archway, Teapot, monsters, etc. This speeds game setup and keeps each set properly separated from the other distinct sets. This tray was tested with FFG greens. Note that the 15 card Seasons sets are very snug when using thicker sleeves.
Divider distribution in the card tray:
- Core – this section should include 2 open divider slots within it
- Other Seasons Sets – these sections should include 1 open divider slot
- Monsters – this section should include 1 open divider slot
- Lucky Gods – this section should include 1 open divider slot
As noted, this design can accommodate either the base game components or the Kickstarter upgraded components, but not both.
The monster storage in this solution uses our standard rail support, whereas the clan minis use a wave rail design that dramatically simplifies construction. If you adorn your bases, this solution is not advised.
What Do You Need?
Kickstarter: Assuming you have the base game and Daimyo box, you will need 1x RSUN-001 and 1x RSUN-002. These two solutions provide total storage for all Kickstarter content and expansions.
Retail: If you purchased Rising Sun in retail, you will need 1x RSUN-001 for your base game. If you own the Dynasty Invasion expansion, you will need 1x RSUN-003. Finally, If you own Kami Unbound and/or the Monster Pack, you will need 1x RSUN-004 which provides storage for both Kami Unbound and the Monster Pack.
Additionally, consider that the RSUN-001 provides storage for the base game components. The RSUN-002 provides storage for the Daimyo components, as well as storage for Dynasty Invasion, the Monster Pack, and Kami Unbound, but the Daimyo box is a Kickstarter exclusive. The RSUN-003 provides storage for the clans and monster minis in the Dynasty Invasion expansion. Finally, the RSUN-004 provides storage for Kami Unbound / Monster Pack combined.
Note: our solutions do not provide storage for the huge playmat board that was sold during the Kickstarter, nor the art book.
Product Notes
- This insert can store sleeved / unsleeved large cards.
- This insert is constructed of HDF (wood product) and is natural colored. HDF does not contain a wood grain as it is a constructed wood product.
- Insert assembly requires some wood glue and about 70 minutes of assembly time. I recommend Sobo Craft glue or another comparable quick setting, tacky glue.
- This product is not officially licensed. All marks are the property of their respective owners.

Let me say I think go7 is one of the best insert makers on the market, and I own probably about a dozen products from them. That being said, I think this design is pretty mediocre. It is better than the plastic trays from CMON, but it definitely could have been much, much better.
Let me start with what is really good about this design:
– The clans are self-contained in a single box each making it easy to hand out boxes to each player.
– There are lots of finger holes for removing stuff like lids or boxes more easily.
– The card design storage is great and can hold cards by groups rather than by seasons.
– The entire base game fits in the box and isn’t split across boxes, even if you have the KS content (though the additional expansions go in the separate Kami box). That way you don’t have to carry two boxes if you are just playing the base game.
– There is no lid lift.
– As always, the margins are tight with things fitting perfectly snug and not loose or too tight, and the material seems very strong.
– The spots are all labeled and the Kami spots have the numbers making it easy to see what goes where.
Now what I don’t like:
– The tab on the token/coin box is problematic. That box fits in the top of the Kami tray which has a large hole on the side for removing from the game box. If you put the token box in the wrong way (the way that seems natural given the orientation of the text on the box), the tab kind of gets stuck. This could have easily been avoided if the hole in the Kami box was a little smaller or done differently.
– The turtle clan has a small tray that is kind of awkward to remove as there is nothing to hold on to. The tab that connects to the lid could have been done differently so there could be a hold to reach and grab it with.
– The couple of things above are pretty minor, and I would probably get it a 5 if it was just that, but now let me talk about what I think makes this design so problematic. Every single miniature is stored individually side-ways in a slot. Now lots of the other companies on the market have been doing this for quite a while, and the fact that go7 tends to avoid this is one of the things that I really like. The problem is that it is the epitome of form over function. It makes the storage look fancy and cool, but it also makes it a huge pain the ass to get things out and put them away.
The Kami are stacked up and overlapping making it a puzzle of how to get the order and orientation correct. For example, to remove the River Dragon, you have to remove three other miniatures first, and putting things back is even worse. It is very easy to put things back in the wrong order or simply have them turned the wrong way where after you put a couple more minis in, you have to go back and redo it to get it all to fit. The labeling so I can easily see where things go, but I have to spend a while figuring out how they go.
Now, I understand that the box is small, and for the monsters there may have not been a better way to make it work, but the problem is, the same thing is done for the faction figures. Instead of the awesomely simple boxes of Blood Rage, every single mini has to be put in separate slots, and not only that, but like with the monsters, you have a very specific order and orientation. Some factions even require that certain bushi sculpts be in specific spots. It is pretty much up to you to figure out all that out, and it is huge head-ache and waste of time. Probably the worst offender of all is the Dragonfly Clan. The shintos have to be put in the box in a very specific order (and before the bushi in that row) and when you put them in, you have to orient them slightly sideways facing downward and as you get to the bottom, do a final rotation just right so that their wings overlap each other. It is one thing to figure that out, but now imagine trying to explain it to your friend playing for the first time.
When I spend money on these kinds of inserts, I am primarily looking for two things: efficiency in space so that I can put more expansions in a single box and efficiency in organization so that getting out and putting away the game is quick. This design is so-so in the former and completely fails in the latter. In fact, the time it takes to put the game away like this is barely better than default that came with the game. As I said before, you are largely just swapping confusion about where pieces go for confusion about how they go. I am also fairly certain you are loosing space by having all these slots. If there was just a big box for each faction that you just throw it all in, I would bet it would take noticeably less volume AND putting the factions away would be ridiculously fast. Also since you are likely to get all the pieces out every time you play, there is no real reason to keep them separately. Maybe if you painted and wanted to keep them from rubbing you would want this, but honestly I think the competitors have a better design for that as the pieces here rub up against the slots a lot. On top of all that, the real kicker is increased complexity in building the boxes and additional cost due to more material.
Now I say all of this really as a plea to go7 to not move toward this kind of design. It is a waste of time, space, AND money for your customers. Sure it looks nice and maybe you might pull in some new customers with the way it looks, but if I have to help every single person at the table figure out how to get their figures back in the box and have the lid fit, that is a failure in design, plain and simple. I love the stuff you make, and it is a huge help for many of the games I play, but you guys can do a lot better than this. Very disappointed.

Have many storage solutions from both go7 and also others and this by far is the worse one I have had to put together. The dragonfire clan box did not fit the models the way the pictures depict. My box does not fit the shinto models with bases. A lot of the fit on these models is very tight.
