This insert is designed to fit inside the versatile Artist Sketch Case available from Hobby Lobby in the U.S. This wooden art case can be carried as a briefcase or satchel and includes an upper swing-out compartment for storage of boards and rulebooks. The case itself is a relative bargain at $25 retail. Best of all, 30-40% off coupons are common so the case can be acquired for as little as $17 + tax.
The insert fits into the empty artist sketch case and the upper storage compartment should be removed from the case since it has such a high profile. You can store boards, small mats, rulebooks, and more right on top of the insert.
This insert and the case is great for inexpensively storing large volumes of standard-sized cards from games such as:
- Dominion
- Thunderstone
- Magic
- Pokemon
- Star Wars
- Netrunner
- and the list goes on…
The Artist Sketch Case is famous for being inexpensive. It is also famous for having wildly different interior sizes. This organizer has been designed to support the smallest size case interiors that we have found or been informed of by customers. In some cases this means that the organizer will be smaller than the interior offered by your case and may slide around a bit when handled. A small amount of movement in the case should be fine, but you can always optionally drop some glue on the bottom of the case and glue the organizer into the case to eliminate any movement.
Product Notes
- This v20 design supports 3mm acrylic dividers. Units shipped prior to MAY 1, 2020 support 2.286mm dividers.
- This insert measures 100mm high and provides four (4) organizational lanes for vertical card storage and one (1) wider center lane for bit storage. Two of the interior divider walls of this insert are ~6mm (2 x 3mm) so that dividers can be placed side-by-side, allowing for many more dividers in this insert.
- External dimensions: 394mm x 300mm x 95mm high
- This solution can store as many as two BB-100s in the center row with some space left over.
- There is ~7mm of clearance on top of the insert to store boards, rulebooks, etc. when used with the Artist Sketch Case.
- This insert has 1188mm of card lane storage. It can store ~3960 unsleeved cards or ~2376 Mayday Premium sleeved cards (.50mm per card) or ~2200 Ultra Pro Deck Protector sleeved cards (.54mm per card). Keep in mind each acrylic divider will also use 2.286mm of card lane space. The values used for the card thickness estimate = .3mm.
- Recommended sleeves include Ultra Pro Deck Protector, Mayday Premium, Mayday Euro, Dragon Shield, FFG Standard, FFG Euro, etc.
- This insert is produced from 3mm HDF.
- Includes fifteen (15) clear acrylic dividers (model EXT-DIV-001). Additional divider packs of type EXT-DIV-001 should be used.
- Insert assembly requires some wood glue and about 15 minutes of assembly time. I recommend Sobo Craft glue or another comparable quick setting, tacky glue.
- Artist Sketch Case and games not included! You will need to buy your own…

I just purchased my fourth ASB-004 and use them to store Arkham Horror, Marvel Champions, and Marvel United. Every one went together seamlessly and fit right into the Hobby Lobby artist case.

Sanding, sanding, sand, all trying to get it to fit in the box. I used a mallet to force it in, and now need a tiny prybar to open the lid. I’ll be removing the lid to power sand the inside to try to get more clearance.
Also mine didn’t come with assembly instructions, but as this was my third purchase I was able to get it together.

Quality’s good, would prefer a proper tutorial to put together than a “General one” but it’s not hard to the point you can’t figure it out.
Also, for those that are going for the hobby lobby case here
https://www.hobbylobby.com/Art-Supplies/Storage-Organization/Storage/All-Media-Artists-Supply-Sketch-Box/p/5227
I would note the dimensions here even show 16.5″ and the dimensions for the insert here state 17″
That’s likely why some are having problems. That half an inch

Our dimensions listed under Additional Information are the shipping/mailing dimensions before you punch the pieces to build and have no relationship to the built dimensions of the insert. So the 16.5 versus 17″ numbers are meaningless.

ahhh, ok, wasn’t sure. Then it should fit fine.

My only previous insert experience is Broken Token, and there were definitely some differences in fit and construction.
The wood is very firm and feels secure once assembled– a much more professional result than Broken Token. But along with that came a very challenging assembly. The pieces had no give to them, so some required a real shove; others required glue and some patience as they set.
My biggest complaint is that, like others have experienced, the fit inside of the Hobby Lobby Artist’s Case is EXTREMELY tight. It required a lot of scraping and edges and shoving, even after sanding down the box. I had to abandon my plans of staining the case and insert…

So I love this insert for use with Arkham Horror LCG. Only issue is with the fit in artist case frim Hobby lobby. It is very tight and was difficult to slide in (That’s what she said). But then the lid won’t close without force. I’ve had to use a dremmell to sand down the uper lid’s inside sides.

Coming from having used broken token inserts, I can’t overstate how solid this feels once fully glued and constructed, and along with the artist case (which for me had no issues with fitting inside), makes something I feel like I could walk around with and not worry about it falling apart or damaging cards.
That said, it comes with no real instructions, not even the “assemble from inside to out” advice that could have saved me a bit of struggle. It’s a simple thing to put together, but you definitely want to do a dry assembly beforehand just so you know how it all fits.
In addition to using some glue, I would also recommend a hammer or mallet to gently get everything tightly aligned.
Also: maybe other people organize their cards differently, but I found the dividers that come with this set to be good for about 50% (or less) of the fill for the box; if you have a lot of cards or expect to fill the box, definitely pick up another set of ext div 001 dividers with your order.

This, along with EXT-DIV-001, was precisely what I needed for my various deck building collections. Right now it’s holding all of my Arkham Horror the card game beautifully, and I couldn’t recommend it more. While the game isn’t near the organizer’s 3000+ card limit, i can’t deny just how cool the overall effect is. With some work, it should also fit my other Lovecraft games with room to spare. I might need to get another one soon!

I went searching for another insert solution to this popular Hobby Lobby case after trying a few of the Broken Token’s solution and being dissatisfied with the flimsiness of those, as well as the inadequacy of my own foam core attempts. I am thankful I came across this site, because these inserts are fantastic. A few critical design differences in this insert over other ready-made solutions: the bottom panel, which adds to rigidity of the lane dividers – the Broken Token ones are notorious for flexing and allowing the dividers to fall out, which happened to me even when being gentle with the case, and results in cards flowing everywhere in the lanes. The insert extends up above the bottom section of the case, which helps keep cards from tumbling out of lanes should your case be inverted, as well as prevents the case from closing on your front/back-most cards should you fill it to the brim. The wood is a smooth composite which helps assure your cards won’t get scratched by the insert itself. It also has a few configuration options which fit nicely with the bitbox accessories.
I own seven of the Hobby Lobby cases and have 2 inserts with 2 more on the way, and can’t imagine any other insert will take its place!

It seems like a minor difference that I cannot fit my abs into the artist sketch box by Hobby Lobby. Otherwise it is a well constructed product. I am just really disappointed it didn’t fit in the sketch box. I glued everything properly too with little gaps between the joints.

Brian, I picked up 4x Artist Cases in Hobby Lobby today (December 20, 2016) and one was a little tight, but I had no problem putting an ASB insert in any of them. Can you measure your outer and inner bottom dimensions on the case. I suspect they are significantly off based on the image and you should return the case you have and request a replacement (based on the dimensions being off significantly).

I have this exact same issue. Mine is off by just under 1/16 of an inch but it is just enough that the insert can’t drop in. Very frustrating!

My insert did not fit in the Hobby Lobby Case. Too large. Even when trying to insert just the bottom piece it would scrape the edges and bow up. I think if I take a sander to the box and shave off a small amount that it will fit properly.

Good design, all pieces fit perfect. About 20 min to build. Used it for FF Star Wars X-Wing cards and bits. Have the cards in FF sleeves and they fit nicely. Also have 2 large bit boxes in the middle. Very satisfied. A suggestion I do have is some dividers without the half circle cut in them would be useful for using parts of the box as large sections of storage for small bits like shield or evade tokens.
